Today is the eighth day in a row that Reagan National Airport has recorded measurable rainfall, and intermittent showers are a good bet for the rest of the day. The rain spoiled large parts of the Memorial Day weekend, but the 1.5 to 4.5 inches of water across the region has cut into the drought.
Tomorrow will probably extend the streak of rainy days to nine. Showers and storms are likely, and a few in the afternoon and evening could be strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts.
Between today and tomorrow, we could pick up an additional half-inch of rain or so.
While a lingering shower can’t be ruled out Thursday (allowing the rainy day streak to grow to 10), it should mark the beginning of a mostly dry stretch that lasts through the weekend.
Although the recent rain has helped the drought situation, we still need about 8 to 12 additional inches of rain (above the norm) over the coming to months to end it. Despite all of the recent rain, National Airport’s monthly total to date is several tenths of an inch below normal.
