DC weather history for June 8

Hail piled inches deep in 1969, temperatures soared to near 100 in 2011 and record amounts of smoke poured into the area in 2023.

On this day in 1969, a severe thunderstorm produced a downpour of hail that damaged crops in Montgomery County and drifted into mounds 6 to 8 inches high which remained for several hours.

And on this date in 2011, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record of 99 degrees. The next day would be even hotter, with a record high of 102 degrees — matching the highest temperature ever posted so early in the season. The low of 79 degrees was also a record-warm nighttime minimum.

“The recent heat wave arose from a massive area of high pressure that developed in the Southwest and South and expanded northeastward over the past five days,” Jason Samenow wrote at the time.

The triple-digit high on June 9 was one of five that summer, that ranked as the second hottest on record.

And on this date in 2023, the D.C. area experienced its worst particle pollution on record as smoke from record-setting Canadian wildfires poured into the area. Some locations experienced Code Purple and Maroon air quality, signifying hazardous levels of smoke.
