We're probably dry across the DC region through Saturday, and the morning hours on Sunday may stay mostly dry as well, followed by our next best chance for rain late Sunday and Monday.
Sunday: The chance of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms rises during the afternoon. Showers and storms could become more numerous Sunday evening and overnight.
Monday: There is potential for on-and-off showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, though the afternoon into evening could end up being the main focus.
There could be some pockets of heavy rain Sunday night and Monday. Neither day looks to have a particularly high chance of severe storms in terms of strong winds or hail, but in summertime an isolated one is always possible.
Anywhere from around 0.5 to 1 inch of rain seems like a reasonable initial estimate for much of the region Sunday through Monday night based on current model data, but localized areas could easily see less or more than that.
While rain chances are especially notable late Sunday and Monday, much of the rest of next week may feature typical summertime shower and storm chances, especially during the afternoons into evenings.
All in all, it could be a decent start to August for rainfall, after July rains helped improve – but not eliminate – the drought situation across much of the region.
