DC’s 90-degree days are piling up fast

DC is getting a break from the heat, but 90-degree days are near record pace. With 13 so far, the city is tied for its third-most 90-plus days to this point in the season.

While we've got a nice break in the heat to start the workweek, it has been a notable year for 90-degree days to date. With 13 such days so far, DC is tied for third most at this point in the season.

A chart showing 90-degree day stats for DC this year. There have been 13, which is near record highs for June 15.

Most spots nearby are seeing well above average numbers to date. Dulles Airport has picked up nine, Hagerstown has seen six, and Annapolis four.

A five-day heat wave that ended Sunday helped boost our count. It included a seventh-earliest-on-record 100-degree high on Friday in DC.

The District averages about seven days of 90-plus in June and has witnessed eight already during the first half of the month.

A graph of highs and lows for the next two weeks from today's European weather model shows plenty of 90s in its forecast.

Our break before more heat, while blissful, will be relatively short.

It could crack 90 again as soon as Wednesday, and more certainly Thursday. Right now, it also appears that next week could also be filled with days 90 or above, although some forecasts are cooler than the one shown here from the European weather model.
