Ominous shelf clouds formed along the front edge of the storms while vibrant, brilliant rainbows followed in their wake. And then came a remarkable sunset with a deep orange glow.
THE SITUATION: The worst of the severe weather has ended as the intense storm that swept from Middleburg, Virginia to Waldorf, Maryland has weakened and move off.
HAPPENING NOW: DC reached 100 degrees Friday afternoon, breaking the record high for the date. A few showers remain possible this evening, mainly across the southern half of the region.
THE SITUATION: A line of strong storms with damaging winds tracked west to east across the DC region Thursday evening. There were numerous reports of downed trees and power outages, with some gusts up to 60 mph reported.
