Following six days of below-average temperatures, summertime heat took control again Thursday. Highs will end up mainly in the mid- and upper 80s, compared with average highs around 80 to the low 80s.
This spike in temperatures may end up being our second "heat wave" — three days at or above 90 — of the year, despite a May that averaged cooler than normal. DC has seen five days of 90 or higher so far, or about two above the average to date.
Highs of 90 or above are favored for DC Friday through Sunday, with a peak in the mid-90s forecast Saturday.
We average our seventh day at or above 90 around June 21 in Washington. So, this heat pulse will keep us at least two weeks ahead of average for days so hot.

After a brief break in the heat early next week, it looks to come surging back later next week. If anything, the signal for next week's round is stronger, with the potential for powerful upper-level high pressure to set up in the Northeast.
