Storm chances are slim with front approaching tonight and early tomorrow

A few showers and storms are possible tonight, but significant rainfall appears unlikely.

"When in drought, leave it out."

That's a favorite meteorological saying, reflecting the tendency for forecast rain to underperform during dry weather patterns. It appears fitting for tonight and Sunday.

A cold front will approach from the northwest tonight and gradually pass through the region on Sunday. But with limited moisture available, rain chances appear low.

The best opportunity for any showers or thunderstorms will come between about 7 p.m. tonight and 2 a.m. Sunday.

Rain chances are highest in northern Maryland and northwest Virginia this evening, especially between 6 and 10 p.m. A few strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts are possible there.

However, most guidance suggests the storms will weaken or dissipate before reaching the DC area later tonight.
