Humid air has surged back into the DC area, and this summertime air mass could fuel scattered showers and thunderstorms late this afternoon into early evening.
The most likely timing is between 2 and 7 p.m., with storms moving from west to east across the region.
The National Weather Service has placed the area in a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe storms. An isolated damaging wind gust is possible, but most storms should remain below severe limits. Thunder and lightning may accompany the strongest cells, so remain weather-aware if you have afternoon sports or outdoor plans.
With abundant moisture in the atmosphere, some storms could produce heavy downpours. Rainfall amounts will vary considerably, but locations that see the strongest storms could pick up a quick 0.5 to 1.0 inches of rain. Other areas may see little or no rainfall.
Additional showers and storms are possible Thursday and especially Friday, when the severe-weather threat appears somewhat higher. The Weather Service has placed the region in a Level 2 out of 5 risk on both days.
