When looking at all weather models and their background simulations that test many scenarios, it does look like Wednesday has the best chance of being the hottest day — though heat may last into Saturday.

Heat may be "major" in some spots by Wednesday, especially if the dew point gets above 70 degrees, creating a heat index near 110.

By Thursday, up to 4.7 million people in the greater region may be under major heat classification.

It's still uncertain how high heat index values may get if dew points drop a bit as temperatures soar toward or into triple digits.
