A look ahead
Thursday and Friday are severely hot with scorching sunshine and highs heading for around 100 to 105. Heat indexes should get to at least 105 to 110; can't rule out 110 to 115 in the hottest spots. This is extremely dangerous heat. DC's record high for both Thursday and Friday is 101; the all-time record high is 106 for DC and 105 at Dulles. Friday may have a few more clouds than Thursday, with an isolated shower or storm possible Friday afternoon or evening. Super muggy Thursday and Friday nights with lows in the 70s. Confidence: Medium-High
[DC region faces dangerous and potentially historic heat wave starting midweek]
The Fourth of July weekend starts firecracker hot with highs near 100 again on Saturday July 4, and only slightly less hot highs in the mid- to upper 90s on Sunday. Both days have a bit higher chance of afternoon to evening thunderstorms, which could be strong to severe if they materialize, but it's too early for any details. Saturday night lows settle in the 70s. Confidence: Medium
The heat should scale back to more typical summer levels early next week with highs mostly in the 80s to low 90s, moderate humidity, and more storm chances. Welcome to July!
