June has been abnormally dry in the DC area. Most places have monthly rainfall deficits of 2 or more inches, allowing drought conditions to persist or worsen.
But Saturday presents the opportunity to cut into those deficits as on and off rain showers seem likely. The weekend timing is unfortunate, but we really need this precipitation.
The showers and perhaps a thunderstorm or two will form along a slow-moving front pushing south across the area, beginning tonight and continuing intermittently Saturday. Locally heavy downpours are possible at times but also expect pauses in the rain.
Outdoor plans will be challenging Saturday but there may be some windows to get a few things done. It will be a day to watch radar and look for gaps in precipitation.
The National Weather Service predicts about 0.5 to 1.o inches of rain through Sunday morning – the majority falling Saturday. A few showers could continue into Saturday evening and a pop-up shower is possible Sunday; but, on balance, it will trend drier for the second half of the weekend.
