DC-area forecast: Showers at times today, scorching later this week

Happening now: Mostly cloudy with occasional scattered showers this afternoon into evening. A few downpours with thunder possible as well. Highs this afternoon upper 70s to mid-80s.

What’s next? A few scattered showers, and maybe a thunderstorm, are still possible tomorrow. Sunshine returns Monday, followed by increasing heat and humidity. Potentially near or above 100 degrees by Thursday.

Forecast in detail

Today (Saturday): A stalled cold front brings mostly cloudy skies, intermittent scattered showers, and maybe a few downpours with thunder this afternoon. Rainfall totals could range from less than 0.25 inches, to more than 0.5 inches with a brief risk of localized flooding in spots that see a heavier storm. Highs are in the upper 70s to mid-80s and it's persistently humid. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: A few scattered showers and a thunderstorm remain possible this evening, but generally rain chances diminish into the night. Patchy fog may develop late with muggy lows falling into the upper 60s to low 70s. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Sunday): Partly sunny skies return. A round or two of scattered showers are possible, with an afternoon thunderstorm maybe in the mix. But like today, there should be plenty of dry time too. Highs in the low and mid-80s. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Any lingering shower or a thunderstorm taper off before midnight as drier air starts to move in. Patchy fog may develop toward daybreak, especially in areas that received rainfall. Overnight lows settle into the upper 60s to low 70s, making for another mild one. Confidence: Medium

A look ahead

Sunshine and summer heat return after the weekend as high pressure builds in, bringing mostly dry conditions through much of the week. Monday begins with areas of morning fog giving way to partly sunny skies. Highs reach the mid-80s to around 90 with moderate humidity. Heat ramps up Tuesday with highs climbing into the low 90s.  Confidence: Medium

Highs then surge into the mid- to upper 90s Wednesday. Some spots could reach the triple digits Thursday and Friday while humidity may send feels like values close to 110 in spots, with at least an isolated late-day storm threat.  If you have outdoor plans, be sure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and take frequent breaks in the shade! Confidence: Medium
