Always a human at the helm: Updated around-the-clock by Capital Weather meteorologists.

Happening now: Morning 70s and 80s aren't quite as hot as the past few days. We're still looking at hot afternoon highs in the mid- to upper 90s and heat indexes up to 100 to 105. Scattered strong to severe storms are possible, especially after 4 or 5 p.m.

What’s next? After a risk of strong to severe storms into this evening, Monday and Tuesday bring relief from the high heat with highs in the 80s. But it's still pretty humid with more shower and storm chances.

Today’s daily digit — 1/10: Thermometer readings well into the 90s before a repeat of late-day storm chances. Still not much to like despite being slightly less hot. | 🤚 Your call?

Forecast in detail

Today (Sunday): Partly to mostly sunny during the morning into early afternoon as highs climb to the mid- to upper 90s. Humid dew points in the low 70s push heat index values to around 100 to 105. While an isolated shower or storm is possible midafternoon, scattered showers and storms should hold off until after 4 or 5 p.m. There is potential for some storms to produce damaging winds and perhaps isolated flooding. Be sure to have a plan to quickly move indoors, if needed. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Scattered strong to severe storms remain possible through around 10 or 11 p.m., then some lingering showers and a weaker storm until about 2 a.m. Stuffy warmth continues overnight with lows in the upper 60s to low 70s. Confidence: Medium

[DC makes it three record highs in a row with 103 on Saturday]

Tomorrow (Monday): The start of the work week features mostly cloudy skies and substantially cooler temperatures with highs in the mid- to upper 80s. But it's still very humid with yet another chance of scattered showers and storms, especially during the afternoon into evening. Some storms could bring strong winds and a flood risk. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Mostly cloudy as scattered showers and a thunderstorm probably continue at times. Lows in the upper 60s to low 70s. Confidence: Medium

A look ahead

Still mostly cloudy and pretty humid Tuesday with highs in the 80s. Low pressure passing nearby looks to keep some showers and possibly thunderstorms going at times. A few heavier storms could produce gusty winds and localized flooding. Confidence: Low-Medium

Partly sunny Wednesday with highs in the mid-80s and humidity finally a bit lower (dew points in the mid- to upper 60s). Rain chances look considerably lower, but an isolated shower or storm is still possible. Confidence: Medium

Highs make a move back to near 90 or in the low 90s Thursday and Friday. Shower and storm chances may trend a bit higher again, too.
