Always a human at the helm: Updated around-the-clock by Capital Weather meteorologists.

Happening now: A few showers and a thunderstorm remain possible the rest of the evening, mainly south of the Beltway, with evening temperatures in the 70s.

What's next? Occasional showers seem likely tomorrow with a few afternoon downpours possible. At least temperatures remain subdued until heat builds next week. Looking very hot mid- to late week.

Forecast in detail

Tonight: A few showers and a thunderstorm are still possible this evening, with the best chance south of the Beltway. Additional showers, leaning on the lighter side, could form area-wide after midnight. Atmospheric moisture levels are up, bringing patchy fog and mild lows in the upper 60s to low 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Saturday): Patchy fog early but remaining fairly cloudy as a slowly dissipating cold front stalls near us. Occasional showers seem likely to roam the region, with a few afternoon downpours possible. Not the best outdoor day, but it may have its dry periods. Highs mainly in the upper 70s to low 80s, but some mid-80s are possible in spots that see fewer showers and more sun, and it's humid with dew points near 70. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: There's potential for scattered evening showers, storms, and some downpours, then late-night patchy fog moves in as rains diminish a bit. Totals from the day into the night could end up a half-inch or more in some spots and much less in others. Muggy lows again in the upper 60s to low 70s. Confidence: Medium

Sunday: Clouds may slowly dissipate as the afternoon wears on. Highs near 80 to the mid-80s. We’re cautiously optimistic that showers and storms will be limited and briefer than Saturday, but do monitor with us in case you have outdoor plans. Confidence: Medium

A look ahead

Sunday night: Slow clearing continues, but a stray shower remains possible. Still humid, with familiar lows in the 60s to around 70. Confidence: Medium

Both sunshine levels and temperatures trend upward Monday into Tuesday. Warmth in the mid-80s to around 90 Monday intensifies into the low to mid-90s Tuesday. At least humidity remains moderate, with dew points in the 60s. Shower and storm chances look very limited. Confidence: Medium

Hotter and more humid as next week continues. It may feel near or above 105 at times Wednesday through Friday if we see the potential combination of sultry humidity and highs way up in the 90s to near 100 materialize.
