Happening now: Slowly dipping through the 70s through late evening under partly to mostly clear skies. Lows tonight mid-60s to near 70.

What’s next? Around 90 for Tuesday. After that, ugly. It could approach 100 as soon as Wednesday, then likely 100 or higher Thursday, Friday, and possibly the Fourth.

Forecast in detail

Tonight: Mostly clear and decent with temperatures in the 70s this evening. A patch or two of fog is possible overnight, with lows in the mid-60s to near 70. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Partly to mostly sunny throughout. Temperatures are up a few from today, with most spots not far from 90. Winds blow out of the south around 10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: The south wind probably bumps humidity up a bit, so temperatures don't fall as easily. Lows mainly around 70 to 75. Confidence: Medium-High

A look ahead

We jump right in on Wednesday. Mostly sunny, very hot, and rather humid. Highs should reach about 95 to 100 across the region. With the humidity, feeling as hot as 105 to 110. Wednesday night lows only down to the upper 70s and low 80s. Confidence: Medium-High

Thursday and Friday turn it up further. It'll come down to details later, but daily and all-time record highs are in play, with highs about 100 to 105 on Thursday and perhaps a degree or two hotter Friday. DC's all-time high is 106, while Dulles's is 105. It'll feel more like 110-plus at peak both days. Temperatures stay up in the 90s well into the evenings. Confidence: Medium-High

It's hard to believe, but a slight cooldown for the Fourth of July could mean highs still near or above 100 and heat indexes again in a 105 to 110 range. Maybe a slightly better shot of a late-day or evening shower or storm. Confidence: Medium
